Welcome to another edition of your pro shop weekly newsletter. What a week it was with The Open, and I think we can all agree it was an incredible tournament.

Competition news

Ladies Invitation Day

I just wanted to say well done to the ladies section for running another hugely successful invitation day this week.  A lot of effort has gone in over the last few years to make the day what it is, and the whole ladies section deserves a lot of credit for showcasing what South Beds Golf Club has to offer.

Congratulations to Kitty Nulty, Christine Boyd and their guests on being the winning team on the day.

Pro Am Victory

Darren played in the Girton Pro Am this week with a team consisting of Kieran Horgan, Micky Purcell and Terry Matthews (all South Beds members).  On a day full of heavy showers the team managed to come out on top with a score of -13 for the day, one shot ahead of the home club.  It was Kieran’s birthday on the day, so the good prizes the team received for their efforts was a nice birthday gift.  Darren played pretty well himself, shooting a level par 69 to come tied 3rd.  The fact that there were only 2 pro’s under par shows how tough the conditions were to play in.

There are plenty of Pro Am’s still available to play in this year, so if you fancy getting a team of 3 together and playing with Darren in a Professional tournament, contact us in the Pro Shop for more details.

Captain / Pro Challenge

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the captain and I as we’ve come up against some pretty inspired golf in our last couple of challenge matches.  This week we were up against regular participants in this event, John McPoland and Bob Russell. 

On what was a lovely evening for a game of golf, John and Bob came out with all guns blazing, getting to the turn in 5 under par for a 4 up lead.

They continued in that form by being 2 under for the next 4 holes, handing us a comprehensive 6&5 beating. All of that means they overtake David Corfan as the leaders in the club house.

Playing with John and Bob is always a pleasure, and they are the perfect example that if you put in a little bit of practise you can still compete, no matter what age you are.

Well done gentlemen.

Fitting news

Mizuno demo day

South Beds Golf Club will be hosting a Mizuno Golf demo and fitting day on Thursday 24 August, between 2pm and 6pm.  We had two demo days last year and they proved to be very popular.

A custom fit expert from Mizuno will be coming along to do some fitting using Trackman to help those booked in find the right equipment to get the most out of their game.

Custom fit times are every 45 minutes from 2.00pm and will need booking in advance. 1 time has already gone so get in touch soon if you would like to make the most of this good opportunity.

For those that are not booked in for a custom fit session, the whole range of Mizuno golf clubs will be available for you to try at your leisure between 2pm and 6pm, and I will be on the range for the duration to help out and maybe pass on a few tips.

That's got some face on it

It’s hard not to be in awe of the putting we see on TV, especially when the world’s best are competing for a major like at last week’s Open Championship. How do you compare?

You will have heard us mention the importance of the ‘scoring zone’ on various occasions, but we can’t stress enough just how vital this area is to lowering your scores. Take a close look at these up-and-down charts below:

As you can see from the statistics here, the best players in the world rely on having good short games when they find themselves out of position.

While having great technique is certainly very important for this, and we can help with that, so is having an evenly gapped wedge set-up that gives you an option from every possible situation.

Take this Mizuno T7 wedge for example; it comes in lofts from 45-62° to cover off any possible set make up and we can use Mizuno’s Swing DNA analyser to optimise your numbers. It also has lots of bounce options and comes in two finishes that we can discuss during a fitting session.
