Captain / Pro Challenge 

Last Friday Pat and I played the second of this year's challenge matches against Pat Timmins and Phil Thrussell. We started with a solid front 9 and managed to get ourselves a 2 up lead at the turn, but Pat and Phil's good golf combined with a couple of mistakes from us on the back 9 saw them through to a 2&1 victory.

Lombard Trophy Qualifier 

Last Saturday saw the qualifier for the 2016 Lombard Trophy take place. Keith Johnson and Martyn Smith both had net 67's on the day, which was the winning score, but Keith won the event on count back. Keith and I will now represent South Beds in the regional qualifier which is to take place on the 13th July at Thetford Golf Club, trying to earn our spot in the final that takes place in Portugal at the end of the year. 

Scratch Team 

The men's scratch team had a good win at the weekend, at home against Wyboston. The team managed a 4-1 victory, with Alex Elliott and Adam Cooper making their debuts in the game. That's two wins from two games this summer; keep it going lads! 

Not to be outdone, the ladies also had a scratch match on Sunday, with the team of Bridie Quinn, Sue Paterson and Jean Hoar managing to get a winning result against Aylesbury Vale. Well done ladies! 

The men's scratch team are taking part in the Peak Production Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday at John O'Gaunt Golf Club. This is a 3 man 36 hole event, and we will be represented by Paul Kirkwood, Luke Charnley and Ian Tottingham. Gook luck lads!

How to stripe your fairways… like Rory 

Well, that was impressive. Just when it looked like Rory McIlroy was going to get pipped to his national Open, he produced some of the best shots of his career - under pressure, too. Russell Knox was applying the heat, in fact he was leading with a few holes to play, before Rory struck with two devastating blows with his fairway woods. 

First, at the par-5 16th he struck a stunning 271-yard 3-wood to reach the green in two and set up a tap-in birdie. He saved the best for last, a laser-like 5-wood from 253 yards for a tap-in eagle. Pure class from the Ulsterman. 

So, fancy striking your woods like Rory? Here are a couple of tips to bear in mind: 

1. Posture - you need to maintain your spine angle from address all the way through impact. We often see amateurs lifting out of the shot, trying to help the ball up - this leads to a top or thin strike. 

2. Rhythm and balance - don't be drawn into swinging hard. You need to maintain your balance with your weight finishing on your front side. 

This sounds easy, but we appreciate it's a hard shot to execute. However, if you can get those fairways working, think of all those long par-4s and par-5s you'll make so much easier.
